A Guide to Your 7 Chakras and Their Meanings

A Guide to Your 7 Chakras and Their Meanings

If you’re interested in spirituality or have explored the many avenues of the New Age movement then there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about the Chakras. On the surface, they can seem a little confusing, however, with our guide you’ll get the overview that you need to understand and work with the 7 Chakras.

What Are the Chakras?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word for wheel or disc. In a spiritual sense, this term is used to describe the 7 energy centres that are found within the body ranging from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each Chakra takes care of certain elements of our physical and spiritual being, they are also represented by a specific colour and symbol.

The 7 Chakras are:

  • The Root Chakra - Red
  • The Sacral Chakra - Orange
  • The Solar Plexus Chakra - Yellow
  • The Heart Chakra - Green
  • The Throat Chakra - Blue
  • The Third Eye Chakra - Indigo
  • The Crown Chakra - Violet

The 7 Chakras Explained

Each Chakra holds different properties and amazing powers. Here are the meanings behind the 7 Chakras...

Root Chakra (Muladhara)
This is the last of the Chakras which stems from the base of the spine. The Root Chakra governs the flight or fight response and is the first to be developed in the womb. It's what gives you that boss energy and the strength to take on any challenges that come your way. Haters beware.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
Your sexual prowess and primal instincts are held within the Sacral Chakra. The positive emotions that you feel such as pleasure, joy and passion are found here and it also works with your creative expression. This is the home of your inner God and Goddess, the divine feminine and masculine. It can be found in your reproductive organs.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
If you want to unleash and tap into your personal power then working with the Solar Plexus is the way to go. This Chakra is associated with your inner fire and is the source of your confidence. When you tune into it you can feel more empowered and influence the manifestation of more personal and professional success. You can find this Chakra above your belly button.

Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The Heart Chakra, found in the centre of your chest, is the home of your loving and compassionate energy. It is also the point where the lower and upper Chakras meet. When this Chakra is activated you will feel more self-love and strengthen your ability to love and be loved. The relationship that you have with yourself and others is heightened when you treat this Chakra with the love and affection it so dearly needs.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
Say it loud and say it proud. The Throat Chakra is what gives you your voice and the power of your expression. When activated you’ll become a force to be reckoned with as you easily and freely speak your truth. As you balance the energy within this Chakra you will excel at public speaking and will notice that you are able to articulate your thoughts and feelings. This Chakra is found (you guessed it) in your throat region.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
If your spidey senses are tingling it's probably your Third Eye opening. This Chakra is where your 6th sense lies, it is the gateway from the physical world to the spiritual and is located in the space between your brows. This incredible Chakra is where your amazing psychic abilities lie. Keep it balanced to sharpen your intuition and connect with your higher self.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The final Chakra is the Crown which can be found at the top of your head. This regal and extraordinary Chakra is connected to your consciousness. It enables you to transcend beyond your spiritual reality and connect with the higher powers. When this Chakra is activated you will become more aware of your presence in this Universe.

Signs of Imbalance in the Chakras

When the Chakras are out of alignment it means that they’re not operating at their optimal level. Each energy centre needs adequate levels of attention to keep it balanced. In other words, you need to put that work in and bring your Chakras to life. However, before you start working on them it's good to understand the signs and symptoms of imbalance and an underactive Chakra.

The Root

It’s good to be grounded, you feel more in control and you have a strong sense of self. If your Root Chakra needs some attention, these are some of the signs that you should be looking out for.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Lightheadedness

  • Feeling danger or uncertainty

  • Restless

  • Lacking energy

  • Rage

  • Resentment

  Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Disconnected with reality

  • Feeling victimised

  • Depression

  • Lacking trust in others or being wary around them

The Sacral

When your creative (and sexual) juices are flowing you can be sure that your Sacral Chakra is in good working order. If you’re feeling uninspired and unsexy your sheets might not be the only thing that is lacking action.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Guilt or shame

  • Self-sabotage

  • Unable to accept pleasure

Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Numb during sex

  • Impotence or infertility

  • Lack of ‘mojo’

  • Diseases within your reproductive system

The Solar Plexus

Full of vitality and life, a balanced Solar Plexus should leave you feeling energised and raring to go. If you are experiencing any of the following then you have issues with this chakra.

  • Lack of self-respect

  • Reactive and easily annoyed

  • Self-hatred

Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Feeling victimised

  • Lack of confidence

  • Self-doubt

The Heart

Love is in the air… or maybe not. When the Heart Chakra is lacking in energy it shows in some of the most intimate areas of your life. If you are suffering from any of these problems then your Heart Chakra needs a little TLC.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Unprocessed grief

  • Challenging relationships

  • Giving love away freely

  • Out of touch with loved ones

  • Unable to empathise with others

  Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Hard to find love

  • Lack of self-love

The Throat

Don’t be afraid to show the world who you are. If your Throat Chakra is blocked it can leave you feeling stifled and without a voice.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Avoid telling the truth

  • Feeling shut down

  • Unable to express opinions or feelings

  • Social anxiety

  • Feeling unseen

Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Shyness

  • Terrified of public speaking

  • Finding it hard to communicate

  • Feeling misunderstood

The Third Eye

Who needs a crystal ball when you have your Third Eye, right? That may be the case for some but if you’re dealing with some of the following aspects it might be time to polish that ball and bring it back to life.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Confused

  • Feeling ‘out of it’

  • Unfocused

  • Close-minded

Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Poor memory

  • Doubting intuition

  • Repeating the same mistakes

The Crown

You are royalty and a valuable part of the Universe. When you fail to recognise this you may be experiencing disharmony in your Crown Chakra. Don’t let these signs and symptoms knock you off your throne, it's time to let everyone know who’s in charge.

Imbalance Symptoms:

  • Constantly searching for spiritual help to no avail

  • Inability to see the world from another's perspective

  • Indecisiveness

Underactive Chakra Symptoms:

  • Spiritually disconnected

  • Extremist spiritual ideologies

  • Easily controlled by others
